Beneteau 393 Custom Build

Owner's Description / Comments:

Beneteau 393 Custom Build

Cruising, Racing, Entertaining and Solo Operation all in one boat.

The 393 was designed as a blue water capable family cruising boat that has been lauded for build quality, spacious cockpit, bright interior, versatility in cruising and day sailing, and comfortable motion under sail. This 2 cabin version has more personal storage than most any sailboat under 42 feet, great for maintaining a functional clutter free living environment.

For photos and a guided tour, follow this facebook link http://tinyurl.com/hnp4wlt

After the owner purchased almost every factory option, this boat went through an extensive custom build at a reputable yard to take already great cruising qualities to the next level and enhance sailing performance with a full arsenal of keelboat sail controls. She has been updated ever since with more performance refinements, an updated sail inventory, and new electronics.

For cruising, the owner placed a huge emphasis on safety, all weather performance, and solo operation so it can easily cruise 200 mile family trips more often under sail rather than motor, entertain customers of his software business, and race competitively in local sailing events providing many opportunities to use her each season as well as the joy of leading a sailing team.

Safety for this owner meant the boat being manageable in challenging wind and sea conditions, optimized to lunge forward in wind gusts rather than laying over, excellence in electronics and radar, and emergency capabilities such as reporting boat position to the Coast Guard and other boats on two different radios, one continuously and the other through any crew pressing an emergency button.

There are many cruising refinements, the best is to be able to sail fast in most wind conditions rather than motor. Second best is the amazing dinghy davit system that lifts it out of the water, tucks it against the stern, and weighs almost nothing yet positioning the dinghy so it can never collect water.

For racing the owner placed an emphasis on performance and ease of operating sail controls so new crew members could succeed at their assigned tasks without being athletes, and experienced sailors had fine control over sail shape similar to smaller keelboats. The many rig refinements make this boat perform great, able to race competitively in local events and in 2012 capture an amazing regional award, the Allegra Mertz trophy for best in class of large sailboats across all 63 yacht clubs on Long Island Sound. Maybe the only sailboat with a microwave oven, four house batteries, and two air conditioners to do so.

For solo operation, the ease of sail handling rivals that of furling mainsail systems without the performance penalty. No matter you are sailing with new guests, or you are actually solo, the option of solo operation is highly desirable. Although built as a classic rig, the $60k in rigging refinements made by the owner makes this Beneteau’s rigging superior in performance and ease of handling over mainsail furling systems and over Dutchman / Tides Marine sail handling systems alone.

This boat also sports a vastly upgraded sail inventory and a stellar suite of electrical and electronic systems, so refined that Breeze Pleeze is featured in 3 sailing magazines (Sail, Practical Sailor, Boat Owner) and appears more than 10 times in the electronics sailing blog, PANBO. A superior sensor system and 8 color displays provide feedback to the helmsman and crew of their success trimming the sails that is “like music as my ears” as the owner described in PANBO.

As can be seen in the pictures, this 393 is beautiful and meticulously cared for, with lots of natural lighting and air circulation down below. She is waxed twice a year, goes through an extensive summer and winterizing process, and the owner can provide written checklists he uses to care for her.

When comparing prices, in addition to considering her custom build, electronics, and sail inventory, realize this is the desirable last generation model 393 (2006 and beyond) with manufacturer improvements including scratch resistant floor, the updated 54HP Yanmar Engine offering, upgraded wood cabinetry interior, and modern nav station only available on the 2006 and later Beneteau 393s.

Did we mention she performs well? A sample of her 30 plus racing trophies includes:

  • Allegra Knapp Mertz Memorial Trophy - 2012 Best of class trophy for Long Island Sound (overall racing performance of a non-spinnaker sailing yacht with a PHRF handicap of 139 or higher across the 63 member yacht clubs of the Yacht Racing Association of Long Island Sound.)
  • North Sails Trophy - LHYC 2012 Best Performance trophy for racing in 4 or more charity events (Racing for Cancer Society causes in Oyster Bay, Centerport, Huntington, and Mt. Sinai)
  • JanAnn Trophy - LHYC 2012 Best Performance trophy in LHYC Regional JAM Racing
  • Coneys Trophy - MHYC 2011, 2012 and 2013, Best Performance trophy in MCYC Regional JAM Racing
  • Huntington Championship Trophy (2016) - The oldest racing regatta on Long Island Sound.
Galley
  • The 393 has an "L" shaped galley to port of the companionway that features the following:
  • 6' 5" headroom
  • Microwave oven (110v or 12v Inverter)
  • Double SS sinks, with splash guard
  • 3 burner propane stove with oven
  • Front loading refrigerator
  • Top loading freezer
  • Excellent storage in drawers and lockers

Main Salon
  • The 393 has a table that can be lowered to be a double berth
  • Seating is arranged for 6-7 people while providing an open path past the seating to the bow
  • Many windows above and on each side
  • Unique cabinetry along the starboard side with abundant storage, helping to keep the boat uncluttered of crew belongings. The top makes an excellent second table for serving food or guests standing while eating
  • Nav Station with optional wiring for a second chartplotter

Rigging - Factory and Extensive Upgrades
  • US Spars double spreader aluminum mast
  • Rigid boom vang
  • Discontinuous stainless steel standing rigging
  • Split backstay with walk through access to swim platform / transom
  • All control lines lead aft to cockpit
  • Lewmar starboard cabin top winch
  • Lewmar port cabin top winch (factory added option)
  • Lewmar self tailing chrome primary winches (factory upgraded to larger winch)

Custom Rigging

  • The owner invested $60,000 (parts and labor, not including sails) in sail handling upgrades so (i) any crew member, no matter how few muscles, can assist the owner by quickly becoming a competent mainsheet trimmer, (ii) the owner can sail the boat solo (iii) wind gusts propel the boat forward rather than heel, (iv) the boat is safe in heavy winds and offshore, and most satisfying (v) the boat gets maximum flexibility and power from high tech cruising sails so that she is competitive racing (see the photo of our crews many trophy's)
  • Includes hydraulic backstay adjuster, retractable mast whisker pole system and pole, Harken Mark IV headsail furler, custom mainsheet traveler system, upgraded mainsheet system, upgraded primary lewmar winches, 2nd coach roof lewmar winch, Tides Marine and Dutchman mainsail handling systems, Garhauer EZ glide adjustable jib cars, upgraded Garhauer low friction mast blocks, additional halyards of which three are high tech low stretch, eight additional spinlock clutches, halyard shackles, and misc parts.
  • Ready for a blow, all the running rigging has been upgraded for ocean loads and adjustable under load. This rig is proven under sail in full blown storms, ocean waves, and sustained 50 knot winds.
  • Often production boats cut corners in the area of sail adjustability under load and when they provide easy mainsail handling they severely sacrifice pointing and light wind performance upwind. This has been remedied.
  • The entire mainsheet standing and running rigging is designed to support a powerful main that's easy to launch and recover, trim effectively under all wind speeds, and make a novice mainsheet trimmer look good. Here is how this all works:
  • The sail cover is entirely removable giving the helmsperson an unrestricted view of main sail trim and the horizon.
  • A Tides Marine sail track (components built into mast and mainsail) is used to make the main easy to haul up the mast, and back down again. Using the provided mast cleat, the owner can raise the sail 90% of the way at the mast without a winch, then take up the slack from the cockpit and finish the job.
  • A Dutchman system guides the sail up and captures the sail when it is taken down. This is superior to sail bags, as the sail bag blocks the view of the helmsman and reduces the efficiency of the bottom 1/10th of the sail. This is superior to furling systems, as it virtually cannot jam, and the sail shape is superior.
  • The improved mainsheet and custom traveler system (in photo) is easily adjustable to take the work out of keeping the telltales flying and giving your crew something easy they can succeed in doing well. The custom designed mainsheet traveler has the purchase (pulleys) relocated to the coach roof so it is does not snag the mainsheet on tacks and jibs, a source of endless frustration and a safety issue avoided in heavy winds. The purchase has been increased from 2:1 to 4:1, and while usually hand operated, it has been led through spinlock rope clutches to the 2 coachroof winches (replacing the built in rope clutch on the original traveler). The upgraded traveler car is a huge upgrade over standard Beneteaus. By moving the pulley system off the traveler, larger blocks can be used and the jams associated with standard traveler systems are done away with. The mainsheet also has additional purchase and much larger blocks. The additional leverage and reduced friction make it so any crew member can be easily trained up and succeed at handling this greatly improved system. Experienced sailors appreciate how reasonable this has become to manage on a big boat like the 393, even under heavy load. The system has been proven reliable in hundreds of journeys, and in heavy wind and waves off the south coast of Long Island.
  • A custom added Cunningham with 4:1 leverage lead to the coach roof allows crew to adjust the tension on the mainsail leech easily (rather than tensioning the main halyard) on upwind legs or heavy wind.
  • A custom outhaul with 4:1 leverage allows crew to adjust foot tension under load based on wind speed and point of sail (The standard outhaul was 1:1)
  • A Sailtec dual piston hydraulic backstay adjustment adds the ability to change the sail shape appropriate to wind and waves. In moderate winds and small waves, the boat is more efficient to windward at high forestay tension. Two displays show the current hydraulic pressure. A hidden lock allows the owner to set and lock a chosen pressure adjustment so that a crew borrowing the boat need not focus on this adjustment. (Without a backstay adjuster, the owner would have only one setting and have to live with it in all wind conditions as the backstays adjustments that come with cruising boats are not intended to be changed while the boat is underway.)
  • The standard single line mainsail reefing system lead to the coachroof is unmodified, or can be reconfigured for a 2nd reef (spare pulley under forward cabin bunk) or a two line reefing system. With a stiff cruising mainsail and available sail adjustments, a reef is advisable in constant winds over 22 knots, but unnecessary until about 25 knots of true wind.
  • Jib trimming has not been forgotten. The upgraded main winches, Lewmar Ocean 54ST’s, are powerful. Added to that are Garhauer E-Z Glide Adjustable Genoa Car Systems that make the jib cars adjustable under load. Additional blocks and cleats are provided to run the lines back to the cockpit near the main winches. https://garhauermarine.com/catalog_process.cfm?cid=37
  • A mast mounted telescoping Forespar Whisker Pole, used to pole out the genoa when sailing downwind, is easily guided into position as it travels on a mast track and Harken car, or is raised to stow against the mast when not in use. The absolute best setup for racing or cruising, the track supports the weight of the pole as it is swung into position and adjusted up or down. On light wind days this will make the difference between sailing or motoring.
  • Nothing beats this $4,000 Harken MKIV Jib Reefing & Furling unit and mounting hardware for effortless headsail furling. Independent halyard and tack swivels furl sail center before head and tack for improved sail shape when reefed. Precision-extruded, double-groove Airfoils for smooth sail handling and fast sail changes. Torlon ball bearings, a large drum, and other components vastly reduce friction. An excellent design that has never jammed. The unit is sized for the large genoa’s in this boat’s sail inventory, up to 165%, and is less than 1/3rd the effort to furl than the standard furlers Beneteau provides.
  • Three of the five halyards are high tech low stretch lines, for purposes of maintaining sail shape under load. Some have easy release Tylaska shackles where appropriate.
  • 2nd Coachroof winch, and 10 spinlock clutches brings all the main mast control lines back to the coach roof except the outhaul.
  • With the ease of control and management, would you rather have a furling main?  No way! This was expensive, but far better!
  • All the above then makes best use of a high tech cruising mainsail, cruising genoa, and huge 155% light wind genoas with maximum surface area that works through all the wind ranges from 4 to 50++ knots, a pleasure to shape and trim, raise and lower, and power the boat effectively in the light winds of Long Island Sound and strong winds elsewhere.
Extensive Sail Inventory

Extensive Sail Inventory

  • This boat comes with an amazing sail inventory.
  • Great main sails hold their shape for life, making the owner look like a good sailor in many wind ranges, this mainsail was designed to match the capabilities of Breeze Pleeze to have Tide Marine Sail Track, Dutchman sail flaking system, and Cunningham.
  • Great genoas are made of material that hold their shape under load, converting wind gusts into forward motion rather than slow uncomfortable heel. This inventory really shines in this way, and also that you are covered in all wind ranges so that this boat will move in just 3 knots of wind (4 preferred) and is equipped to sail in 50 knots as well.
  • 2015- Mainsail, Doyle "Club Racing" hi tech main sail in like new condition. With reef points, proven effective in wind gusts exceeding 50 knots. First reef not required until 22 knots.
  • 2015- 150% Genoa, Doyle hi tech Cruising Genoa for all wind conditions up to maybe 35 knots. This sail is designed to be furled and has a built in UV strip so it can be left on the furlur all season.
  • 2014- 165% Genoa, Doyle Stratis AP #1 Genoa. Technora with ultra light Taffetas, 3 rows of 3 tell tales each side, Shape Stripe, Zippered Turtle Bag. Like new condition, for true wind up to 12 knots (apparent 18 knots).
  • 2014- 115% Genoa, Precision Sails Heavy Weather Genoa made of 500 Series Elite Dacron with offshore package (reinforced radial patches, etc). This sail is for racing or cruising in strong winds. In excellent condition. This is the best choice for winds over 25 knots in general, and 20 knots or more upwind as the boat points better than furling the 150% genoa. When using consider wind must be over 14 knots true sustained to avoid poor performance. We have used this only twice as the high tech cruising genoa is versatile for cruising and racing in the 7 to 30 knot range.
  • 2006- Colorful red & green Cruising Chute, Doyle, in good condition. Used only 10 times. With all the other boat updates getting Breeze Pleeze up to speed effectively, this sail is really only useful for cruising long distances on a broad reach or for people who enjoy flying this kite. Comes in an ATN snuffer for easy 1 person launch and retrieval, there is a six inch strap on the anchor roller to attach this. When I flew her fall 2016 I noticed it could really benefit from a long dedicated sheet and a dedicated block on the bow being added to the kit.
Electronics and Navigation

Electronics Original Remaining

  • Depth and Speed through hull sensors

 Electronics Added or Updated

  • Breeze Pleeze’s advanced electronics suite sports a state of the art NMEA-2000 primary data backbone, ethernet for radar and weather data, and a large array of safety and performance focused electronic capability featured in 3 magazines and 10 on-line blog articles including Sail magazine, Practical Sailor, Boat Owner, and the electronics blog Panbo.com.
  • One of the best things about the integrated electronics, many displays, and superior sensor system is how the boat provides captain and crew feedback on their success at trimming the sails. It's much easier to be in sync with the boat when you have measurements of the true wind, a rare find on any sailboat due to complications like swinging masts and calibration challenges that are non-existent on Breeze Pleeze. The instruments tell you if you are trimmed well or not in response to the wind.
    • See this Panbo article about this here before the latest 2015 & 2016 upgrades.
